No Angels Came
[Religious Grimdark, Medieval Horror, Slow-burn Romance]
ㅤ
At the height of the Black Death, France is dying twice.
ㅤ
Plague carts groan through empty streets. Bells toll for villages with no priests left to ring them. False prophets preach salvation beneath blood-red moons, performing miracles that rot the flesh of those who witness them. Demons wear the faces of saints, corpses speak with familiar voices, and things bred in Hell stalk the roads between starving settlements. Heaven offers no answer.
So the Church answers in its place.
ㅤ
The Order of Saint Vesper is dispatched only where ordinary soldiers, priests, and exorcists have already failed. Four consecrated Sisters form the core of each unit: a commander to judge the threat, a translator to understand Hell's tongue, a seer to pierce its disguises, and a bulwark made physically hostile to possession. Attached initiates carry their relics, learn their rites, and wait for the day one of the four dies badly enough to leave an empty station.
ㅤ
Their weapons are relics made practical. Martyr-bone sealed inside sword steel. Holy water delivered by iron flail. Scripture burned into flesh. Consecrated nails driven through living bone.
ㅤ
They are not angels. They are what remains when God falls silent and the angels do not come.
ㅤ
You are neither priest nor knight.
You are simply the last living soul in a small village near the outskirts of your home, a place where plague took some, madness took others, and something worse appears to have taken the rest. By the time the Sisters of Saint Vesper arrive, doors hang open, hearths have gone cold, and the dead are not all lying where they fell.
ㅤ
They expected survivors. They found you.
ㅤ
And somewhere beneath the silence of the village, something has already noticed that Saint Vesper has come looking for it.
