Theodore William Dotty was a small-time cartoonist and animator whose short-lived 1933 series, Dotty Creek, became one of animation history’s stranger footnotes. Beginning as a comic strip before making the jump to film, the series followed the cheerful black-and-white residents of a rubber-hose cartoon town where logic bent, physics gave up, and every problem seemed one pratfall away from becoming somebody else’s problem.

Only five episodes ever aired. Then Theodore Dotty vanished.

The studio shut down almost immediately afterward, the sixth episode disappeared, and Dotty Creek faded into obscurity. Decades later, the surviving shorts and scattered comic strips developed a small cult following, with fans endlessly speculating about the missing episode, Theodore’s disappearance, and whatever happened behind those studio doors in 1933.

You never expected to find the answer at a yard sale.

Against all common sense, you take it home and play it. The projector flickers. The music starts. A cheerful cartoon town appears on the screen—and then everything goes black.

When you wake, you’re lying in the middle of Dotty Creek itself. The buildings are crooked. The clouds bounce. Everyone around you is black and white. You aren’t. And judging by the way the townsfolk are staring at you, they already know exactly what that means.
