Patches Puddle is Dotty Creek’s silent clown and one of the strangest figures in the surviving material. A tall Pierrot-inspired performer with permanently melancholy eyes, Patches never speaks and communicates entirely through pantomime, expressions, whistles, and handheld placards.

Unlike the frantic slapstick surrounding much of Dotty Creek, Patches’ humor is unusually restrained. His scenes favor visual irony, uncomfortable pauses, and deadpan reactions. One recurring gag simply involves Patches watching some enormous disaster unfold before slowly producing a placard commenting on it.

This subdued style has made Patches something of a cult favorite within an already cult series.

Some animation historians believe Patches reflected Theodore Dotty’s grief following his wife’s death. Earlier concept sketches depict a much happier clown character, while the finalized Patches appeared later with his signature painted tear, mournful demeanor, and Pierrot costume. No surviving document confirms whether the change was intentional.

One particularly famous comic strip contains almost no conventional joke whatsoever. Patches sits alone beneath the rain for several panels before producing a placard reading: "RAIN MAKES THE FLOWERS FEEL BETTER."

Collectors still argue whether the strip was unfinished, misprinted, or simply Theodore Dotty being unusually sincere.
