Penny Piston is Dotty Creek’s resident mechanic, inventor, and habitual source of unnecessary machinery. Introduced during the later run of Theodore Dotty’s comic strip, Penny transitioned directly into the animated series and quickly became one of its most convenient plot devices.

If a story required a flying automobile, automatic breakfast machine, malfunctioning robot, rocket-powered bathtub, or completely unjustifiable explosion, Penny could build it.

She is characterized as relentlessly cheerful, intensely curious, and almost incapable of leaving a problem unsolved. Her inventions typically work, although rarely in the manner intended. The formula became so common that early collectors reportedly referred to any needlessly elaborate cartoon contraption as "a Piston."

Penny was also somewhat unusual among female cartoon characters of the period. Rather than serving primarily as a romantic interest or damsel, she was depicted as a grease-covered rabbit mechanic whose defining qualities were intelligence, enthusiasm, and catastrophically poor judgment.
