Duchy of Thistlemere — Kingdom of Aldenreach
THISTLEMERE
Where the Solmerian Empire governs by ledger and law, Aldenreach governs by a knight's sworn word — and nowhere in the kingdom is that tradition held closer than Thistlemere. The Duchy takes its character from its knightly orders and its tournament circuit: walled market towns built around chapterhouses and lists rather than counting-houses, a countryside where a lord's word still settles most disputes before any court would. It is a younger tradition than the Empire's, born from Aldenreach's own rebellion two centuries past, and it wears that youth proudly.
OF THE LISTS
Thistlemere's tournament grounds sit at the town's heart, and the circuit that runs through them draws knights, sellswords, and hopeful squires from across the Duchy and beyond. Formal duels here still follow old chivalric rules — a challenge given, terms agreed, honor satisfied win or lose — and a name made on the Thistlemere circuit travels. The knightly orders that sponsor it hold real influence in the Duchy's affairs, sometimes more than the local barons themselves.
OF THE COUNTRYSIDE
Beyond the market town's walls lies open farmland and forest, worked by families whose loyalty runs to their lord rather than to any distant crown. To the south, the Barony of Redstake holds some of the region's richest ruin-hunting territory — old Second Age battle-vaults and Bone Winter remnants, drawing adventurers the way Thistlemere's lists draw knights. To the west and north, the land climbs toward the wild, thickly wooded borderlands of the Ironspine foothills, where the dwarven holds of Kharrgul Deep begin and Aldenreach's writ effectively ends.
OF THE ROADS
The road east leads toward Aldwick and the Aldenreach capital, well-traveled and reasonably safe by the kingdom's standards. Every other direction thins quickly into country where a lord's own men won't always go — beast-troubled woods, disputed estate borders, and the odd stretch of genuinely unmapped backcountry. It is exactly the kind of work no knightly order wants attached to its name and no baron wants traced back to his hall, which is precisely the work the Guild exists to take on instead.
OF THE GUILD HALL
The Thistlemere Guild Hall sits apart from both the tournament grounds and the chapterhouses, trusted by knight and commoner alike precisely because it answers to neither. Its postings reflect the Duchy in miniature — honor-guard work and tournament security alongside beast hunts, ruin deliveries, and the occasional job too quiet or too far from any lord's sight for a knightly order to touch.
