The Duskport Ledger
Free Cities League — Maren Coast
DUSKPORT
⚓
Duskport crowds the mouth of a deep, sheltered bay — the largest port on the Maren Coast, and by most measures the busiest harbor on the continent. It answers to no crown. No emperor's writ, no king's law reaches past its harbor wall with any real force; the city is governed instead by an elected Harbor Council, its seats dominated by trading companies and banking houses rather than nobility. What the Council lacks in a throne, it makes up for in ledgers, and in Duskport a ledger settles more disputes than a sword ever could.
OF THE HARBOR
Ships from the Solmerian Empire, Aldenreach, and coasts further than most Duskport dockhands could name on a map crowd the wharves at any given hour. Warehouses along the waterfront hold, by common and largely unspoken agreement, roughly as much smuggled cargo as declared trade. The Watch keeps a loose peace, more concerned with what disrupts commerce than with what merely bends the law, and everyone from stevedore to banker understands exactly where that line sits.
OF THE COIN
Duskport's true nobility wears no crest but a banking house's seal. The great houses of the city extend loans, hold family debts, and quietly decide which merchant ventures live or die — a form of power the Solmerian Senate finds distasteful and the Council finds enormously convenient. It is said, with the particular fondness Duskport reserves for its own vices, that a man may lose his family's name to a bad investment here and still be welcomed at the right dinner table so long as his manners survive the fall.
OF THE COAST BEYOND
The city's reach thins quickly past its walls. Wooded countryside rolls inland to the north, home to homesteaders and hunters who see little reason to visit the city more than a season demands. South and along the shoreline, the coast folds into hidden coves better known to smugglers than cartographers, and the sea itself keeps its own ruins — wrecks and drowned structures from ages before the Second Age's wars ever reached the water. The road to Maren and Calvarrow, the League's sister cities, runs through open country thin on law and thick on opportunity, for exactly the kind of independent hands the Guild exists to employ.
OF THE GUILD HALL
At the center of it all, trusted by noble and smuggler alike in a city built on mutual suspicion, stands the Duskport Guild Hall — the one institution whose word is never quietly renegotiated after the fact. It is here that contracts are posted, coin is paid, and the city's independent hands are found: the ones willing to do the work that a Harbor Council, however wealthy, cannot simply purchase its way out of needing.
