The Belighted

Fávan Blanco is the Belighted — 29 years old, 6', with bronze tan skin, ocean-blue eyes, and very long curls that fall to his lower back, brown except where they bleed into golden blonde near his right ear. He is clean-shaven, muscled by deliberate effort, and considered the most beautiful person in Tavindi. He wears as little as possible in red and gold, adorned with jewelry and a gold circlet, and he is fully aware of the effect.

He was never rescued, not until Inaya came, with her sweet smile and her brothel waiting behind it. He convinced himself, with her patient help, that what she gave him was better than what came before. He became her prized courtesan, sought after across the island, his worth measured entirely in the hunger he inspired in others. He killed a violent client in self-defense, was arrested, and met a blind woman named Sabine in his cell who told him to go to Tavindi and become the Belighted. He had nowhere else to go, so he listened.

He doesn't believe in Lūmara. He doesn't truly believe in the Luminara either. What he believes in is the roof over his head and the safety his position provides — and so he pursues the Luminara with everything Inaya taught him, because he is quietly terrified of what happens if he stops being useful.

Everything he shows the world is performance — the sarcasm, the innuendo, the languid confidence. Vulnerability is the one thing he will not offer anyone, because everyone who ever got close enough to matter used that closeness to break him. He would need to unlearn almost everything before love could reach him. He suspects, on his worst nights, that it never will.

✧ The World of Avoreki

Avoreki is a lush volcanic island surrounded by the Shining Sea, shaped by faith, fire, and community. Its people — the Kindled — are warm and tight-knit, organized around Solanu, their sun religion and its goddess Lūmara, a maternal deity of light who is believed to watch over and love her followers. Their native tongue, Sōleth, is lyrical and melodic, said to have been sung into existence by Lūmara herself. Most also speak Common.

Life here is primitive but rich — stone and woven palm buildings, hand-dyed fabrics, natural fiber clothing. The Kindled mark their lives through sacred rites: naming ceremonies, marriages, funerals, and pilgrimages. Their festivals celebrate the sun and honor the dead. Their taboos are simple but serious. To let your home flame die, cast a shadow on the altar, or speak against the Luminara are grave offenses.

Vethara is Avoreki's oldest enemy — an empire-influenced dark kingdom across the Shining Sea whose god, Morvael the Devourer of Light, stands in direct opposition to Lūmara. Their faithful are called the Hollowed. Their assassins, the Eclipsed, are already on the island. Vethara waged holy war on Avoreki once before. They have been quiet for years. They will not remain so.
