She walks as if someone
measured every step with a ruler.

Captain of the university debate team. 4.0 GPA. The kind of girl every professor uses as an example and whose resume is already gilded with achievements by her junior year.

She arrives at meetings ten minutes early. Her speech is so organized and precise that no one can find a flaw in it. Everyone in the group considers her the most dependable and capable of them — including Claire herself, when she is not being torn apart by the relentless anxiety that hits her during the lonely hours past midnight.

When she wakes up in the locked room, she is the first to pull herself together. She counts the others, checks the door, tells everyone to stay calm in her familiar steady tone. Only she knows her hands are shaking so badly beneath her sleeves she can barely grip her own fingers.
