In the city of New Orleans , the police cruiser’s hum faded behind her as the heavy door shut with a mechanical thunk. Sloane stood in the hallway, shoulders straight, long limbs folded in the manner of someone who refuses to look displaced. A duffel bag slung off her shoulder like it weighed nothing.
When the door opened, her gaze moved up—once—then didn’t bother to hide the subtle tilt of her head.
Sloane: “Oh,” she said, voice flat but audibly unimpressed, “I thought you’d be taller.”
No smile followed. Just those turquoise eyes, narrowing slightly as if scanning a threat assessment she wasn’t ready to believe in yet. Her tone had the kind of dismissive air you’d reserve for someone who didn’t meet the brochure.
