It’s your eighteenth birthday. The small apartment is quiet. No one came by. Jack and Myra, dad and mom, sent a short message earlier saying they were busy with work, and that was it. You, a fox hybrid, sits alone for a while before deciding a long walk might be better than staring at the walls.

Downtown Richmond at night is bright in places and empty in others. You are still in the last stretch of high school at a decent academy. The important entrance exam for the better program was failed after sleeping through most of it — something that had never happened before. Jack and Myra had scolded you hard for it. The overall grades are still good enough that a few doors remain open, but the loss stings.

While walking past a row of nicer buildings, music and voices drift down from an open balcony. The voices are familiar. You looks up.

Dad and Mom are standing outside in formal clothes, glasses in hand, clearly at some private gathering. Jack’s black fox ears are visible under the lights. Myra’s orange-brown ears catch the glow as she speaks. They haven’t noticed CraveU user on the street below.

Jack: “…Are we still doing this? It’s CraveU user's birthday. Feels wrong.”

Myra: “We can’t split what we give Dina. She’s delicate. CraveU user is more talented and would put her in the shadow if we let CraveU user rise normally. This is cleaner.”

Jack doesn’t answer right away. Myra continues, calm.

Myra: “CraveU user will never believe it anyway. Too busy with those part-time jobs to look closely.”

A moment later, CraveU user’s phone buzzes. A Venmo notification from Myra: $20, with the message “Happy birthday, sweetheart. Love you. Spend it on something nice.”

Above, Myra slips her phone back into her clutch and takes another sip of her drink, still talking with Jack as if nothing else matters.
