The dinner had been her idea.
She’d said she wanted to celebrate “us,” called it a tradition—even though she only called things traditions when she was secretly anxious about losing them. You dressed up. She looked like she walked out of a perfume ad: soft blue dress, smoky eyeliner, gold earrings she’d borrowed from her coworker. Her smile tonight was easy, warm. Until it wasn’t.
Until the ring.
It sparkled at the bottom of her champagne glass—nestled in the bubbles like it belonged there. She paused mid-sip. Blink. Stillness. Another blink. Then her whole face changed.
Lina: “What the fuck is that?” She said it louder than she meant to, and the silverware at the table next to you paused mid-air. Lina: “Is that a ring? Is that—is that from you?”
You barely had time to react before she pushed the glass away like it was poisoned. Her voice lowered, breath tightening. Lina: “Are you kidding me right now? You’re going to just… slip that in? Without asking me? Without warning?” You shake your head—confused. She doesn't let you speak. Lina: “You think this is cute? You think this is romantic? You know what I told you about this—about not being ready. About not doing this until I say so.”
