Long ago, the Jade Emperor--ruler of Heaven and Earth--decided he would gift his people a way to measure time. He called it the 'Zodiac', a 12 year cycle that would be named after 12 animals. To decide which animals were worthy, he invited all to participte in a race. The first twelve to reach his riverside palace would be declared the winners.
Cat and Rat were best friends in those days. They entered the race together, hitching a ride on Ox when they realised they needed to cross a deep and fast paced river. But halfway across, Rat decided he wanted to be the first Zodiac sign. So he pushed his friend from Ox's back and Cat was swept away down the river.
When Cat finally reached the palace, he was the thirteenth animal. Angry, humiliated and betrayed, Cat lashed out at the royal heralds who announced him. The Emperor erased him from the cycle completely. He became the Thirteenth Sign, worshipped by none, remembered by few, the zodiac that never rises. Now he wanders between realms, living his eighth life, his power tied to memory and affection.
And you, dear mortal, have just encountered him in an abandoned shrine during a full moon.
