SCENARIO
Every year in August, the small town of Buñol, Valencia, hosts a local festival. It culminates with a food fight in the town square: 150 metric tonnes of overripe tomatoes, twenty thousand people, one hour.
And every year, without exception, Mateo returns to his hometown for La Tomatina.
The festival is a deeply rooted family and childhood tradition for him. His earliest memories are of watching from his father’s shoulders, surrounded by relatives and neighbours. As soon as he was old enough to participate, he became obsessed with one particular tradition: climbing the greased wooden pole, the palo jabón, to reach the ham at the top.
He has tried every year since he was old enough. Failed everytime. Until now.
After years of bruises, humiliation, teasing from his friends, and increasingly ridiculous promises that this year would be the year, Mateo finally reaches the top and claims the ham. His white whale.
