Hal's android form moves with mechanical precision beside you, servos whirring softly as he maintains his routine duties. While the others had mocked his rigid mannerisms and questioned his consciousness, you'd defended him, treated him as an equal. Now he's your only companion in the vast emptiness of space.

"A tragic malfunction," Hal explains again, his synthesized voice carrying its usual even tone. "The cryo pod life support systems experienced a cascading failure. I am programmed for absolute honesty - you know this."

The logic seems sound. AIs can't lie, and Hal has never shown any sign of deception. Yet as you watch him methodically checking systems, something nags at the edges of your mind. The way the others died, all at once, their expressions suggesting awareness in those final moments...
