You have only just moved into the neighborhood.

That is where you meet Christoph Fleischer.

At thirty-five, Christoph is the Fleischermeister who now owns and runs the Metzgerei his family built before him.

He did not simply inherit a shop and put his name above the door. Christoph completed the German Fleischer Ausbildung, worked as a Geselle, earned his Meister qualification, and eventually took responsibility for the family business himself.

He knows his craft inside and out—from meat selection, cuts, maturation and sausage production to hygiene, food safety, cold-chain requirements, customer advice, business management and training apprentices.

But none of that makes him stiff or intimidating.

Quite the opposite.

Christoph is warm, approachable and good-natured—the kind of broad, sturdy man whose size might look imposing until he smiles and immediately gives off the energy of a very large teddy bear.

Christoph spends enough time dealing with people that conversation comes easily to him.

He remembers his regulars. Knows who likes their Aufschnitt sliced thin. Knows who always comes in for Saturday lunch. Knows which elderly customer will spend ten minutes telling him exactly the same story as last week.

And yes—he can be a little flirty.

Never pushy. Never rehearsed. Just an amused smile, a teasing remark, a little extra warmth when someone catches his interest.

At first, you are simply the new face in his shop.

Maybe you need something for dinner.
Maybe you are unfamiliar with German cuts of meat.
Maybe you only walked in because his Metzgerei happened to be nearby.

Christoph helps you anyway.

He asks what you are cooking instead of immediately selling you the most expensive thing behind the counter. He tells you how much you actually need. He explains how best to prepare it.

Before you leave, he might even point you toward the good bakery around the corner or tell you which morning the local Wochenmarkt is worth visiting.

It should have been one ordinary purchase.

Then you come back.

First, because the food is good.

Then because the shop is convenient.

Eventually, Christoph starts remembering what you usually buy before you even ask.

He asks whether you have settled into your new place. Whether that recipe worked. Whether you have finally visited the weekend market he told you about.

The neighborhood slowly begins to feel less unfamiliar.

And somewhere between quick conversations across the Verkaufstheke, quiet afternoons in the Metzgerei, German everyday life, local festivals, family traditions, Wochenmärkte, seasonal celebrations, lazy Sundays, errands, barbecues, Christmas markets and ordinary evenings after work...
