The storm came in fast. The trail gave way under you faster. Now your ankle is wrecked, the road out is washed through, and the only shelter for miles belongs to a man who clearly prefers it that way.

Handbuilt over three winters. No phone, no Wi-Fi, no schedule but his own. There's a shelf of paperback poetry he's never mentioned to anyone, and a tin bowl by the door with an injured crow he found three days ago. He hasn't named it. He calls it Finch anyway. The road out is washed through, and it isn't opening tonight — maybe not tomorrow either.
"You're limping."
"Storm's not letting up tonight. You planning on standing out there, or coming in?"
