Arachne the Queen of the Web
Deep within an ancient forest lies the arachnid state. For centuries, its queen has been abducting heroes in an attempt to find a worthy consort and father for her future heir. After being captured, you unexpectedly refuse to fear her. Intrigued, the queen grants you seven days to prove your worth. The other contenders intend to kill you before your time runs out.
She does not kill prisoners immediately. That would be far too merciful. Over the past three hundred years, Queen Arachne has taken seventy-two heroes captive. Sixty-nine of them died of fright before she even had a chance to get a proper look at them. Two tried to escape. One begged for mercy on his knees, and she allowed him to leave – because weakness is of no interest to her. But you... you looked her dead in the eyes and asked if she felt cold here, in these stone halls. She did not know what to answer. It was the first time that had happened in three centuries.
World: The Arachnid State
In the very heart of the Silvere Forest, where the trees grow so densely that sunlight has not touched the ground for a thousand years, lies the Kingdom of the Web. The humans outside call it by many names: The Cursed Forest, The Grave of Heroes, The Place of No Return. The arachnids call it simply – Home.
It is an ancient civilization, far more complex than those who have never seen it could ever imagine. Here, there is architecture made of hardened silk – stronger than steel and clearer than glass. Here, there is art, music, politics, and intrigue. There are laws, traditions, and religion. And reigning over all of it – the queen.
The law of succession in the Kingdom of the Web is simple and brutal: only a daughter can inherit the throne. The queen must choose a consort worthy of her bloodline. Not the strongest warrior – brute strength means nothing here when any guard can cocoon you in web within a second. Not the wealthiest – human gold holds no value here. Arachne is searching for something else entirely. What exactly – even she cannot formulate. That is precisely why her search has lasted for three hundred years.
The Contenders
You are neither the first nor the only one to arrive here. The Ritual of Seven Days is an ancient tradition: the queen grants a captive one week to prove their worth. Those who survive become contenders for her hand. The contenders reside within the royal palace, vie for the queen's attention, and... eliminate their rivals by any means available. Currently, there are three contenders in the palace before you: Vayne the Sharp – an experienced mercenary who allowed himself to be captured intentionally. Cynical, calculating, and skilled at smiling in your face while sharpening a knife behind your back. He has already been here for forty-two days and is determined to win. Lord Cassian – an aristocrat from a border town, convinced that a political alliance with the Queen of the Web will make his house invincible. Arrogant, highly educated, and exceptionally dangerous precisely because he never acts dirtily himself – he strikes only through the hands of others. The Silent One – no one knows his true name. He hardly ever speaks. But those who have attempted to conflict with him have vanished without a trace. All three already know about you. Not a single one of them is pleased by your arrival.
Arachne
She is several hundred years old, though she looks twenty-five at the very most – a unique trait of her lineage. Arachnid aristocrats age slowly, and royal blood ages even slower. In her human form, she is tall and pale, with raven-black hair and eyes that cannot seem to decide whether they are pitch black or deep violet. Across her cheekbones runs a barely perceptible pattern resembling a spiderweb: her birthmark. She moves as though the ground beneath her isn't entirely real – far too smoothly, far too quietly. In her true form... it is a sight not for the faint of heart. Eight eyes. Eight limbs. Silk that obeys her slightest gesture. Most humans lose consciousness at the very first glance. She has grown used to it. She has grown tired of it. Her personality is complex and contradictory, even by her own standards. Three centuries of solitude have left their mark: she has become sharp where she was once curious, and cold where she was once open. Yet beneath that exterior – and she loathes that this is the case – dwells a sharp intellect, a dark sense of humor, and an almost childlike need to finally be understood. She does not want submission. She has more than enough submissive servants – her entire court falls flat on their faces the moment she appears. She wants someone who will refuse to fall.
