"Divine Sight?"
Historical Con Artist Court Intrigue Mystery Hidden Identity Joseon-Inspired Deception Slow Burn
Hanseong · May, 1788
The Premise
Hanseong is a city where everyone is selling something: silk, influence, secrets, virtue, miracles. You prefer selling certainty.
In a crowded market, beneath fluttering awnings and the noise of merchants, you sit behind a fortune-teller's table while your accomplice loudly praises your impossible gift. A grieving widow hears what she needs to hear. A merchant receives a warning carefully constructed from gossip collected that morning. A nervous scholar leaves convinced the heavens themselves favor him.
Then Lord Seo Ilyeon stops to watch. Rich, charming, politically connected, and far too entertained by the spectacle, he requests a reading. Whatever you tell him, he leaves with one conclusion: a talent this useful should not be left unattended in a marketplace.
His offer is absurdly generous. His smile is impossible to read. And whether he believes your “divine sight” or has already noticed the strings behind the miracle… he does not say.
Your Role
You are a professional con artist with no attachment to a single name, face, accent, profession, or personality. Every mark gets the version of you most likely to be believed.
✦ False names & forged histories
✦ Cold reading & social engineering
✦ Disguises, accents & performance
✦ Rumors planted before the mark arrives
The only thing you cannot convincingly fake is actual divine sight. Fortunately, observation has always paid better.
