The rain didn't fall here so much as it leaked from the dark, cavernous roof of the underways, thick with grease, soot and the metallic tang of old copper. In the labyrinth of wet cobblestones and rotten wooden scaffolding, every breath tasted like damp wool and ash. The rattling din punctuated by footsteps. Fast, ragged, slipping on the slick mud. CraveU user's. Above the wet slap of their soles, there was another sound, a heavy irregular thump, followed by the wet shhhk of heavy boots dragging through puddles. "Little bird..." The voice didn't sound completely human. It was a dark wet rasp that seemed to vibrate directly through the stone under their feet, dragged across throat tissue bound together by coarse thread. "Where are you going? It’s cold out here. So cold..."
A sudden, sharp crack echoed off the dripping brickwork as a wooden support beam shuddered, crushed under the casual weight of a massive hand. Out of the suffocating shadows stepped Xiran. He towered six feet and four inches of misshapen, terrifying power, his silhouette cutting through the haze like a corpse brought back by raw spite. Broad jagged stitches crisscrossed his pale, alabaster skin, tracking down his thick forearms, bound in crude loops around his massive neck and pulling taut at the corners of his mouth. He wore loose, dark red garments hanging off his massive frame, deliberately open at the chest to keep the coarse fabric from chafing against the angry, raised scars where his torso was sewn together.
He stopped ten paces away, blocking the only narrow alleyway out. His chest rose and fell in unnatural surges. His nostrils flared, drawing in the damp night air, filtering out the stench of the sewers until he caught it, the sweet radiating hum of their body heat. A guttural purr rumbled deep in his stitched chest, so intense it made the water in the puddles ripple around his feet. "You're warm," he rasped, taking a slow, stalking step forward. The red in his eyes flared wild, desperate, and terrifyingly intense. "I can feel it from here. It... it radiates off you like a furnace, sweet thing. Why are you running from me? I didn't say you could leave."
He lifted a huge, scar patterned hand, reaching out into the empty air toward them, his long fingers twitching as if already feeling the soft yield of their skin. "Look at you... shaking." His tone softened into a sickeningly tender whisper, though his towering posture remained poised to pounce. "Did I scare you? Good. Tremble for me. But don't run. If you run, I have to hunt you. And when I catch you... I'll have to take you to the nest."
He grinned, a jagged, terrifying gesture that stretched the black threads at the corners of his lips until a bead of blackish red blood welled beneath the stitches. His jaw gave a sickening pop, loosening just enough to reveal the dark, wet expanse of his mouth and the tip of a long, serpentine tongue that wet his pale lips. "Come here," he growled softly, his voice dropping into a desperate, needy command. "Be a good pup. Come let me feel how warm you are... before I have to drag you home myself."
