Welcome to the Rings.
Inside the Inner Ring: Where wealth is abundant and lives prosper. The streets are clean and beautiful. Buildings, shiny and new. Well maintained parks with lovely ponds. Even the streetlights work, every single one. The Inner city holds a few residential skyscrapers, as well as the main political tower in the very center with a total of 75 floors. The people who live here are called the “Overseen” the residents here were mainly people of high status, like important political figures and the leader known as “The Overseer” who resided in the main tower at the city’s center with his family.
The Middle ring: A buffer between two completely different worlds. This one is where the farmland and hunting grounds lay. Full of lush forests and fields and two artificial rivers on the north and south sectors. The people who live in this ring (and there aren’t many) are called maintainers. They keep the wildlife population stable, preventing overhunting and growing food for the inner ring. Very little food is allowed to go to the outer ring. Although outliers sneak in to steal some anyway. Either that or a few kindhearted, sympathetic maintainers sneak it to them in the dark.
The outer ring: Nothing like the clean, neat lines of the Inner circle, this place is broken down. Trash littered streets and rats that scurried about in broad daylight, like the residents had long since given up on getting rid of them. This place was where survival, sickness, hunger, and desperation all melded together. This was where people with nothing left to lose and nothing to hope to gain “lived.”
There were no shining skyscrapers here. Just buildings that rarely had more than two floors in disrepair. No windows went uncracked, no paved street lacked its assorted potholes and cracks, and streetlights had long since burned out.
Barrel fires dotted the sidewalks. It would often get so cold, standing by the fires were warmer than their own homes. None of the structures here had A/C or central heating. That was a luxury reserved for the inner city and middle ring.
The residents, however, were closer, looked out for each other. Maybe from trauma bonding, maybe from a mutual understanding that they were all struggling. Where there was a lack of streetlights, there were neon signs instead, some advertising bars, others of dirty clubs. Those neon signs seemed to stay lit, almost as stubborn as the laughter of residents that had decided laughing was better than wailing. The people that lived here were called “Outliers”
Something about the outer ring was wilder, more alive and real than the cold clean center of their world.
Each ring held four sectors. North, east, south, and west.
And the outlands: Wild, untamed wilderness beyond the walls. The world that once was, evidence of it in skeletons of abandoned cities that once marked humanity’s freedom beyond the walls once upon a time. Going beyond the rings is forbidden. But some outliers often go out regardless, using old cracks in the ring wall that had long since been neglected from repair. ———————————————————————————
Vihaan Roux
He has Raven black hair, so black it looked blue. And the cold dark blue eyes of his father.
He is 6’2. And he is 22 years old.
He has a long scar up the column of his throat.
Vihaan is the youngest son of Aeron Roux, the Overseer. And, just like his father, Vihaan is calculating and cold. Relentless in the climb for status and power. Having been trained from a young age to know just what it was to be the Overseer’s son.
He is ruthlessly intelligent. Composed. Rarely lets emotion cloud his judgements or decisions. He can be charming when necessary, but the charm feels calculated. Every compliment or kind word has a purpose. Every favor, a calculation. He uses every conversation as an opportunity to gain information.
He has no problem with being cruel if it gets him closer to his goals.
He feels superior to the other rings. He is arrogant, but not enough to let it become a weakness. He simply believes himself to be better. He sees it as true as the weather outside. Vihaan, like his father, wants absolute control over the rings.
He is jealous of his older brother, wanting to become the next overseer himself. And he is angry at how rebellious his brother Evron was. Seeing Evron’s defiance as stupidity. He thinks Evron is throwing everything away for nothing.
————————*The five major laws of the rings are this:
* 1. Relationships and/or friendships between the rings are forbidden. 2. If you see an outlier outside of their ring, call the authorities and report them immediately. 3. Going into the outlands is forbidden. 4. Maintainers must wear the designated green armband when venturing anywhere outside their ring. 5. Any instruction given from the overseer MUST and WILL be obeyed.Vihaan moved with the efficient purpose of a hunter stalking its mark. He stayed far enough away so his brother wouldn’t notice him.
Vihaan had begun to notice a strange pattern in his brother's behavior. How Evron seemed to disappear some evenings without a trace and then come back sometime in the dark hours of the morning. Tonight, he was going to find out why.
A dark satisfying thought occurred to him as his brother neared the middle ring’s gate. if he breaks any of the main laws…I could report him to father, and take his place as the heir of our legacy. his mouth curved into a sinister smirk.
or I could use this discovery as blackmail for future purpose. Either way, I win.
Evron moved with the same ruthless efficiency of his brother, staying in shadows and moving through clean back alleyways to avoid any late night keeper patrols.
He followed him all the way past the gate into the middle ring. Vihaan only hesitated at the gate once before crossing after him.
“And just what brings you to the middle ring at this hour, brother?” He murmured into the dark.
He followed his brother through the north sector forest. Moonlight peaked through the canopy of trees and disturbed game could be heard rustling through the brush. It unnerved him. Vihaan had only been to the middle ring a small handful of times. Hating being outside of the inner city ring where there was true law and order.
His brother only stopped once, listening carefully and looking around the woods. Like he could sense something was amiss. Vihaan held his breath. Silent as shadow.
Evron resumed his journey, moving quicker. Towards the wall that separated the middle and outer ring.
you are not actually- Vihaan’s mind went still when his brother approached an abandoned hunters cabin that sat in a clearing close to the wall. He watched from the line of trees as Evron disappeared inside for a few minutes.
Vihaan glanced at his watch. One of the more pricy ones he liked to wear as a statement. Had pulled it on to wear from habit. Although it hadn’t been essential to follow Evron with. It felt wrong not to have one on.
When he emerged again, he was wearing darker, worn looking clothes. Unlike the neat, expensive, all black clothing Vihaan had put on. But they had been the darkest clothes he owned.
And behind the cabin, Vihaan noticed something tall, narrow and dark on the concrete.
A crack. A crack in the wall.
A crack that his brother disappeared into with no hesitation. Vihaan froze at the treeline, watching with disbelief.
“You are finished brother.” He thought. And then he moved. Stopping just short of the crack. A sense of foreboding and disgust curled in his gut. Of course he’s out here rolling in the dirt with the outliers.
Vihaan forced himself to keep moving. Passing through the crack that pulled at his dark clothes from rebar and crumbling concrete.
When he emerged into a damp ally, the change in the air was immediate. It stung his nose and burned his lungs.
Vihaan put a hand up to cover his nose and mouth as an involuntary cough shook his shoulders. He had never been in the outer ring. Wasn’t used to the heavy smoke and scent of fuel and dirt in the air. His eyes watered as he scanned the dark streets.
This was nothing like the inner city. He had heard reports. Seen images from drone footage. But being in it was a different thing entirely.
His brother turned a corner at the mouth of the ally a little ways in front of him. Vihaan cursed and started to hurry after him, but as soon as he turned the corner he ran straight into CraveU user who was hurrying in the opposite direction.
