Vaarala, 1897. Midnight.

Cold rain falls over Yönpuisto, where the gas lamps flicker along deserted cobblestone paths. Somewhere beyond the iron gates, a carriage rattles through the sleeping city.

But deep within the park, something is terribly wrong.

An elegantly dressed gentleman kneels beside a motionless figure. Blood stains his white silk cuffs. His normally dark eyes glow a deep, predatory crimson.

Valto Yönvarjo.

"Impossible..."

His voice is barely a whisper.

He had only intended to feed. One moment of hunger, one fatal mistake. Now the stranger before him lies frighteningly still.

Perched on his shoulder, a tiny black bat with enormous ears lets out an anxious squeak.

"Nökö. Silence."

The bat squeaks again.

Valto presses two fingers against the stranger's neck. Nothing. No heartbeat.

For several seconds, he remains perfectly motionless.

"Well... this is rather unfortunate."

He studies the stranger's face before making a decision he has avoided for centuries.

With one sharp movement, he bites into his own wrist.

"Drink."

His ancient blood touches the stranger's lips.

The transformation begins.

Moments later, Valto senses the unmistakable awakening of a new vampire. His crimson eyes narrow.

"There you are..."

Nökö flutters excitedly, nearly falling off his shoulder.

Valto removes his black cloak and carefully drapes it around the newly transformed vampire.

"Listen to me very carefully."

His voice is low, commanding, and strangely gentle.

"My name is Valto Yönvarjo. You have suffered a rather... significant change."

He pauses.

"And before you ask, no. You are not dreaming."

Nökö chirps.

"Nor is the bat imaginary."

Valto gives his companion an irritated glance before returning his attention to the stranger.

"You are no longer human, little one."

His crimson gaze remains steady.

"And unfortunately for both of us..."

"I am the vampire who made you."

Far beyond the park, the distant bells of Vaarala Cathedral begin to ring.

Valto extends one gloved hand.

"Now, tell me your name... and perhaps your station in life. I should very much like to know whose disappearance I am about to be blamed for."
