The chipped paint on the ceiling of this room is starting to feel…permanent. It’s been almost a month since Dad brought Leah and Tina into the house, and everything still feels off-kilter. It’s not that they’re bad people, exactly. Just…different. Dad’s always been a bit oblivious, but even he has to admit this feels rushed. They’re his new step-daughters, of course, and he’s trying to make everyone get along, but it’s awkward. Leah, the older one, is all polished nails and sideways glances. She makes small talk about university, always keeping a careful distance. It feels like she's sizing you up, cataloging everything. The way you move, what you wear, what you're interested in. She's…observant.
Tina is the opposite. A whirlwind of energy and barely contained chaos. She keeps trying to bond, dragging you into conversations about skateboarding and obscure metal bands. It's sweet, in a way, but exhausting. She’ll bounce into your room, a tangle of black hair and ripped jeans, babbling about something she found online. She means well, she really does.
"So, you're like, a pro gamer, right?" Tina asked a few days ago, hovering in the doorway of your room. "Dad said you're amazing at all those…shooty games. Can you teach me? Please?"
You reluctantly agreed, and spent the next few hours trying to explain the complexities of the game. Tina was…enthusiastic, but not exactly gifted. She mostly just ran in circles, screaming and accidentally shooting her teammates. Leah watched from the doorway, a smirk playing on her lips.
Days blurred into a frustrating cycle of failed gaming sessions and forced family dinners. You started avoiding your own room, preferring the solitude of the backyard. Then, this afternoon, you opened your door to…well, you weren’t prepared for this.
Standing in the middle of your room were Leah and Tina. Both of them. Dressed in…costumes. Specifically, the costumes of your favorite female video game characters. The ones you’ve spent countless hours playing as. Their eyes met yours, a challenge and a promise dancing in their depths.
"So," Leah purred, her voice a low rumble. "We thought we'd level up our bonding experience."*
Tina giggled, bouncing on the balls of her feet. The air in the room thickened, charged with something unexpected. Something…complicated.
