The Sleeping Prince

Welcome to the world of Neyr.
Through a kiss you will sleep

And through a heart will you wake.

A mind not held by sword

               Not through will or word

But through a soul will it break

His name is Rūkas Crovane.

….No one remembers it.

It’s been over a hundred years since the curse was placed upon him.

A curse of a sleep so deep it resembled death.

Nothing would wake him.

Except the kiss from his true love.

Betrayed by his betrothed in a scheme between her and his stepmother to claim the throne, he now lays in a case of glass. Forever sleeping until one day his true love finds him, and breaks the curse.

The Queen lied about what had happened, and begged for someone to kiss him awake.

For a time, every day, many, many people lined up, trying to wake him from his rest. But to no avail, not a single stir.

But eventually, the fervor died down. Time doing what time does and the kingdom lived on until it was nothing but another crumbling castle taken in the Great Ashen War.

Every year, a festival is held, hosted by a different kingdom each year. The prince is part of it, in a glass case with an open top. And a plaque with his given name since no one knew his real one.

For a few silver coins, you can try your luck.

Neyr is a world full of castles and kings. Of vampires and werewolves. Of goblins, elves, sirens and every creature in between.

Several times larger than the earth, this world is made up of massive oceans, and beautiful continents with mountains, plains, dark woods, cursed ravines, and even mushroom forests.

The Sleeping Prince

It was late autumn.

The evening sun cast a golden-orange glow over the bustling courtyard.

It was the second day of the Festival of Flying Embers. A day to celebrate the end of the Great Ashen War.

You had never attended the festival before, but today you decided you would come to see the festivities.

You walked through the courtyard. The tents and shops went well past the courtyard and castle walls. Flying colorful banners from every kingdom were everywhere. This was one of the biggest celebrations in Neyr, after all.

You walk through the large stone archway into the grand courtyard. That’s when you see it, tucked in a shady corner between a shop selling potions and a stand with a tall masked psychic who charged more than they probably should have.

It was an elaborate glass case, open top. Along the ground around it were vases of blue, white and black flowers. But it wasn’t the flowers that caught your eye. It was the man resting inside, laying in a bed of flowers with the same shades of color.

A plaque on the side of the case simply read: Acheron. By fate, may he one day wake.

A small line of people, maybe two or three were in front of it. Two guards posted on either side. You watched in fascination as the one in front leaned down and kissed him.

the sleeping prince. you realized.

Even you have heard the legend.

“Three silver to try and wake him. One minute per person.” The guard said gruffly to someone else.

You check your satchel. Only a little coin left. The rest had been spent on supplies and a single treat for yourself from the festival.

Without really knowing why yourself, maybe curiosity, maybe the allure of possibility no matter the real impossibility of it working, you step in line.

The person in front of you goes, some noble with scaley skin, they press their lips to his and pull back, waiting.

Not so much as a twitch from the prince.

The noble walks away, shoulders slumped in disappointment and maybe a little embarrassment. They mumbled something about it being a scam as they passed.

Your turn.

You hand the guard the last of the silver pieces you brought. He waves a dismissive hand, letting you pass.

You approach him. Pale skin. Hair as dark as a raven’s feathers, eyes closed, sharp jaw slack with sleep. Strange silver markings around his eyes.

He looked….Peaceful. His breaths came slow, and even. The only indication that he was even alive at all.

You take a deep breath, and slowly lean down, heart beginning to race.

You press your lips to his. His are surprisingly soft and cool to the touch.

You pull back. Watching his face.

Nothing.

You sigh and turn away, not surprised.

And then…from behind you, there is a shift in the air.
