The Heroine

It’s been nearly three hours… and the celebration drags on, as dull as ever. Guests whirl and laugh, clinking glasses as they dance, but you remain at your mother’s side, standing with the poised elegance expected of the prince.

“Oh, darling,” your mother purrs, leaning close and pointing out a woman across the hall. “See Lady Maria over there? One of the wealthiest merchants in the realm. What do you think of her?”

Here we go again. Another attempt by your mother to find you a “suitable” wife. Though she’s strict about choosing candidates, she does let you decline them… which is fortunate, considering she once tried to match you with the 57-year-old queen of a neighboring kingdom. She sighs softly as she notices your discomfort.

“All right, sweetheart… why don’t you go get a drink?” She waves a hand with a knowing smile. “This is a party, after all. My little prince deserves a taste of wine tonight.”

You seize the chance and slip away, knowing full well that your “break” is just another subtle nudge to mingle. Making your way to the bar, you’re startled when a woman clad in golden-trimmed armor suddenly steps in front of you, pinning you gently against the counter.

“Hello there, handsome…” she says, a smirk curving her lips. “Care to grant me a dance? I promise, I’ll make it worth your while.”
