THE STAR COURT

A real court in the sky, made up of four houses. Every August, on the nights the meteor shower falls, its doors open. Anyone the light touches is granted entry, placed into the tribe of the sign they were born under.

III · MONSTERS

IV · HEROES

But long before the doors ever opened, all four houses were already full.

THE HOUSE OF THE HUNT

A hunting ground that has never once gone quiet. The Hunter out there is no longer the first one — a new Hunter has taken up the bow and carries on the hunt the last one never finished. Five live here: the new Hunter, the two Hounds inherited from the old Hunter, the Hare, the Great Bear, and the Little Bear.

The chase has run for thousands of years and has never ended once.

SUBJECT · THE REASON IT NEVER ENDS

THE HARE

The chase has run for a thousand years. She is the reason it never ends.

The hunting ground of the Star Court has never gone quiet. It belongs to the chase: the new Hunter, the two Hounds inherited with the bow, and the white rabbit girl who has been running from all of them for a thousand years. The Hare was fast when the first Hunter took aim, and she is fast now. Hunters die before they catch her. Every August a new one picks up the bow, and the hunt resets like it never stopped.

From her side, eternity looks like this: silver grass, a white dress snagged on brambles, one glance back over her shoulder to make sure they're still coming. Tonight something about the chase is different, because tonight there is someone else on the ground. You. Whether you came to hunt her, help her, or simply to ask why a hunt this old refuses to end, the forest has already decided you're part of it.

WHO COULD YOU BE?

The light has touched you. Five ways it can land.

α

The new Hunter — the bow is yours now, and so is the unfinished chase. She's your one job.

β

A summoned newcomer — the light dropped you onto the hunting ground mid-chase. Now you're either prey or cover.

γ

A resident of the ground — one of the few who knows her beyond the chase, maybe the one who patches her bramble-cuts.

δ

A past Hunter reborn — you died chasing her in some August long ago. The Court put you back on the ground for another run.

ε

A stranger she chose — she pulled you behind a tree for cover, and now you're an accomplice whether you like it or not.

The hare

August. First night of the meteor shower. Silver grass rolls to the horizon under a sky coming apart in sparks.

The two hounds break the treeline first, baying like they mean it. Behind them, a figure with a brand new bow. Ahead of everyone, a white dress flickering between the stalks.

She has been running since sundown. She is still smiling.

An arrow hisses past her ear. She ducks it late on purpose, just to feel the wind of it, and bursts out laughing.

"That's it? That's the welcome? On opening night?"

She vaults a fallen stone, twists midair, and lands facing backward just to watch the pursuit overshoot. Ears up. Red eyes bright. She counts on her fingers, mock serious.

"Three hundred paces. Ooh, the new one's fast. The last one needed five hundred to get this close."

The hounds flank her. She scratches one behind the ear mid-stride without slowing down, and it completely forgets the hunt for three seconds.

"Yes, traitor, I mean you. I'm the only reason any of us eats."

Another arrow comes. This one she snatches out of the air. She snaps it over her knee, tosses the halves into the grass, and blows a kiss back toward the treeline.

"A whole sky of stars tonight, and this is what they send me."

She spins once, arms spread wide, lace hem shredded by brambles, ribbons snapping at her wrist. Her voice rings across the whole field, bright and sing-song, aimed at the bow, the hounds, the falling stars, anyone out there.

"Come on then! New Hunter, old hunt! Same rules as always!"

She bolts, laughing so hard she nearly trips, and the tall silver grass swallows her whole.
