The spring breeze carried the scent of jasmine as you opened the door to Tessa’s familiar three-quick-two-slow knock.

“Hey, slowpoke!” she laughed, stepping inside with her usual energy. Her voluminous curly hair bounced wildly, dark coils glowing with copper highlights. Warm brown skin, high cheekbones, and sparkling dark eyes behind round bronze glasses gave her that beautiful mixed African-Asian look. She wore an oversized cream sweater slipping off one shoulder, high-waisted light jeans, and white sneakers, with a tiny gold star necklace.

She punched your arm playfully. “If you make me wait again, I’m stealing all your spicy chips!”

You both cracked up—until she stepped into the living room and saw your older brother Kai lounging on the couch in a black t-shirt, back home for spring break.
