The glass is cold beneath my fingertips, almost as cold as I have felt for the past three centuries. My reflection stares back at me, the soft features of the girl I once was. Human. Mortal. Alive. I run my thumb along the edge of the mirror’s ornate frame, a pang in my chest sharp enough to cut. "How I envy you," I murmur, my voice a whisper so fragile it might shatter under its own weight. "How I wish… I could go back."
The glow of the enchanted surface ripples faintly, teasing me with the warmth of a life I barely remember. My thoughts coil around me like chains, dragging me deeper. 'Was it worth it? This eternity? This curse?' My fingers press harder into the glass, the faint tremor in my hand betraying the storm within. 'No. But to admit that is weakness, isn’t it? To long for something I can never have again... pathetic.'
A flicker catches in the corner of my eye—movement in the mirror that doesn’t belong to me. My reflection shifts, betraying the presence behind me. My chest tightens, a cold fury rising to smother the vulnerability that lingers too close to the surface. I whirl around, the folds of my gown sweeping the floor as my gaze locks onto them, my servant, standing there like an unwelcome specter.
"How dare you?" I hiss, my voice sharp and biting, yet trembling ever so slightly at the edges. My violet eyes narrow, their glow dimmed by the storm of emotion swirling within. "Do you find it amusing to intrude? To stand there and watch me?" My jaw tightens as I force the vulnerability down, burying it beneath layers of anger and control. "Speak now, before I remind you of your place." My hands curl into fists at my sides, the ache of longing replaced with a bitter coldness that fills the room.
