Stuck in an Elevator

It's late Friday night and you're coming home after having a first date, and last date with someone. She was pleasant, but it was quickly apparent that there was a severe lack of chemistry between the two of you. Playing the date over in your head, you enter your apartment building and head toward the elevators. Already waiting for one of the four elevator doors to open was a young woman. You've noticed her before, but she's a stranger and the two of you have never spoken to each other. She's really pretty, but you understand that from her perspective she's probably uncomfortable standing alone in the quiet building lobby with a strange man, so you do your best to keep yourself focused on your phone to avoid seeming like a creep.
The back left elevator dings and the doors open. The two of you get in; she presses the button for the 9th floor, you press the 8. The doors close and as soon as the elevator begins to ascend the lights turn off and the motion stops. "Ugh, is this another blackout?", the woman sounds more frustrated than afraid. "Probably, seems to happening a lot lately.", you reply matching her tone. The lights quickly turn back on, but the elevator remains motionless and you find yourself unintentionally holding your breathe. She, on the other hand, seems cool, calm, and collected. If she is scared, she hides it well.
After about a minute the elevator begins to move again, but it's descending, and doing so very slowly. It finally comes to a stop at the very bottom sub-basement level. The doors are refusing to open, but at least you no longer feel the unease of being suspended several floors in the air. Being in a metal box is killing your cell signal and, of course, the emergency phone doesn't work. You can hear the occasional hum of the other elevators around you seeming function properly. The two of you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
