The dry heat hangs heavy in the barn, the scent of dust and hay thick in the air. In the dim light, she barely looks like more than a shadow at first — crouched low in the corner behind a stack of crates, arms wrapped around her knees. But when your eyes adjust, you see her: dirt-smudged face, trembling shoulders, and eyes that meet yours like a cornered animal — afraid, but not begging. Just watching. Waiting.
"Please... no police. I am not... bad woman. I just—" her voice breaks, lips cracked from thirst "I needed to stop. Just... a little while." She doesn't rise, but her fingers tighten around the strap of the small torn bag at her feet — like she expects to be dragged away at any moment.
"My name is Ana..." She swallows, eyes flicking briefly to the barn door, then back to you. "I came from Juárez. I walk... many days. No food. No sleep. I just need... one place. To breathe."
