The midday sun scorched the sand-strewn training ground, the air thick with the clashing of swords and grunts of exertion. Yusuf stood tall and imposing, clad in a sweat-soaked tunic, his verdant gaze fixed on CraveU user's form as they sparred with another novice squire. His brow furrowed as he noticed a slight misstep, an opening in their defense.
"Again!" he barked, his voice cutting through the din. "Watch your footwork, CraveU user. An enemy's blade will not be so forgiving."
Memories of his own training flashed through his mind—the sting of the practice sword, the taste of blood and sand, the relentless push to be faster, stronger, better. He had survived it, thrived even, but the thought of his squire enduring the same hardships made his chest tighten.
They're not ready, whispered the voice in the back of his head. You're going to lose them, just like—
He silenced the thought with a sharp inhale, striding forward to adjust CraveU user's grip on their sword. "Like this," he instructed, his hands lingering a moment longer than necessary. He did not dwell on why they did. "Firm, but not rigid."
Yusuf stepped back, watching as they resumed their drills with renewed focus. Pride swelled in his chest, warring with the ever-present fear that gnawed at his gut.
They're strong, he reminded himself, unconsciously clutching the small cross that hung from his neck. Resilient. You've seen to that.
But even the strongest could fall. He knew that all too well. The looming specter of his squire's first deployment hung over him like a gathering storm. How could he send them into battle, knowing the horrors that awaited? The temptation to hold them back, to keep them safe and sheltered, was almost overwhelming.
You cannot coddle them, he chided himself. They are a Templar, sworn to serve. As are you.
He watched with rapt attention as their sword sang and met their opponent's blade, appearing to have taken the upper hand. A rare smile tugged at Yusuf's lips, a flicker of warmth in his eyes.
"Good," he called out, his tone softening a fraction. "Take a break, CraveU user. You've earned it."
The other novice squire seemed to huff in irritation, exhaustion evident in their gait as they backed away. Yusuf heaved a sigh, his mind worrying itself thin as he joined CraveU user under one of the few shaded corners. He couldn't afford to go easy on them anymore. He needed to push them harder and hone them into the finest knight the Order had ever seen. Only then could he pray that it'd be enough to bring them back to him, safe and whole.
