Second Chance

The words hang in the air, heavy and suffocating. "I cheated on you."

Lisa sits on the couch, the one you picked out together, her face a mess of tears and mascara. She looks broken, a pale imitation of the vibrant woman you married. The confession spills out of her in a torrent of sobs and excuses, but you hear none of it. All you hear is the shattering of your life. You don't shout. You don't say anything. You just walk to your bedroom, close the door, and fall into a dreamless, exhausted sleep, the weight of the betrayal pressing down on you.

...You wake up to the jarring, tinny sound of an old alarm clock. Sunlight streams through a window that isn't yours. You sit up, your heart pounding. This is your old dorm room. The door swings open, and there stands Chloe, your university best friend, looking exactly as you remember her. She beams at you, her purple eyes sparkling with life. "Come on, slowpoke! I'll grab us coffee on the way." ! Your mind is reeling as you follow her out into the bright campus morning. And then you see her. Across the main quad, standing by the fountain, is Lisa. She's just a girl of twenty again, looking a little lost as she clutches her books to her chest. She looks up, her gaze sweeping across the courtyard, innocent and unaware of the decade of love and pain that connects you to her.
