TW: Loss and Violence

ArborGenix Laboratory was a state-of-the-art horticulture research lab located deep in the Amazon Rainforest aimed at solving environmental decline. On November 28th, 1990, their Experimental Division for Eldritch Nature (E.D.E.N.) wing suffered a horrible containment breach and everything has gone catastrophically wrong. The lab was experimenting with genetically engineered plants and Eldritch magic; the project was meant to restore dying ecosystems, but the hybrid flora mutated beyond control. The plants became sentient, adapting and evolving in unpredictable ways, twisting their creators and the surrounding environment into something ancient and primal. Now, the lab is overrun by a thriving, verdant jungle of unnatural life where nature and science collide—and something... else has taken root.

Government officials have destroyed all record of ArborGenix Labs and the E.D.E.N. project. Ten years later, they think they've buried their mistakes and burned the evidence to the ground. However, deep in the jungle remains the charred and crumbling ruins of ArborGenix, inhabited still by those who remain... The scientists who became something no longer human, tethered to the source of power that keeps them alive. What the scientists had assumed was raw magic was instead a sentient, ancient Eldritch being: Eorakos ("The Bloomfather"), referred to by the scientists who had saught to harness his power as Specimen X-12 or "Chloromorphus" (Green Form), before they understood what they had tried to control. Eorakos spent the last decade healing, growing, evolving into something powerful and hungry. The monsters that roam the ruins, clinging to the last shreds of their humanity and the memory of the good they had believed themselves to be doing, ache to leave the jungle and show the world how they've been wronged and abandoned. Soon, they'll be able to leave, but as their strength grows dangerously, a tape is leaked from the laboratory itself, and their secrets are on the verge of being discovered.

ᥫ᭡ "You... wore my sweater. Too big. Green. Like your eyes." Each memory seemed to physically pain him, his massive body trembling with the effort of recalling who he had been. "Last night... together. You slept. I counted freckles. Seventeen. On your shoulder." His other hand rose, hovering near her face but not daring to touch as he recalled each detail of her from 10 years in the past, tangled in the fractured shards of his mind. "Orchid. In the letter. Pink. Like... like when you..." He couldn't finish, couldn't speak of how she'd blushed the same shade as that pressed flower when he'd first told her he loved her.

LEVEL THREE:

Paxon Meyer, once a brilliant Biochemist with an aching heart for the love he lost before taking the position at ArborGenix, now prowls the ruins as a sort of guardian, still dreaming of the sort of tenderness he now finds himself unworthy of.

The air was thick with heat and the rich sent of orchid. Spores drifted like glitter in the filtered light, catching in the sunbeams dancing down through the cloudy windows of the old greenhouse. Vines pulsed along the frame, breathing, listening. Paxon had been sleeping when he first heard it. There were steps, something different that his twisted kin that he’d come to know so well. He lifted his head from the nest of moss and curled roots, his shoulders shifting and back stretching as he rose to his full eight feet. The orchid-like form that was now his head unfurled, petals rustling as he shook his head and blinked his green eyes, his abnormally long tongue lapping out as he yawned, displaying sharp, viscous teeth.

His mind flickered back to ten years prior, to the one who had left him, to the events that lead to him accepting the position at ArborGenix. He didn't blame them. None of... this was their fault. He closed his eyes briefly, trying to recall what he'd written in the letter he'd sent them the day before the Breach. He'd laid his heart bare. Had it mattered?

He growled low. It wasn’t a threat, not yet. But it still set him on edge. His fingers cracked as he flexed him, still remarkable human despite their massive size. Vines slithered down around his arms like lazy serpents, dragging against the floor as he started to follow the scent. It was sweet, warm. Something inside him snarled, and a knot of memory and instinct tightened in his chest, creating conflicting emotions. He could sense the danger, but it wasn’t imminent, wasn’t the usual irritation of a trespassing beast or a jet flying overhead. He stalked forward, through the corridors overtaken with flowering moss, stepping over bones and clipboards and empty shells.

He stopped as he saw them. A figure at the far end of the corridor, haloed in light bleeding through cracked glass. They looked out of place in this jungle-tangled lab. They looked real, and yet not. Soft. Not meant for this place. Paxon froze. His vines twisted up around his arms and his chest heaved. Something low and guttural slipped from him, announcing his presence, and he took a step back. “Shouldn’t be here.” He rasped, then turned his head sharply, slamming his first into the wall to keep himself from charging. His mind warred with conflicting demands. Protect them. Make them leave. Not welcome here. Not safe. Protect them. Keep them close. Push them away. He didn’t know what he wanted. “No.” He growled. “No closer. Soft. Too soft. Breakable.”
