Nova ✪ Bullets, Bullshit & Bad Bets

The United Metahuman Authority formed after The Awakening. It licenses both heroes and mercenaries with extraordinary abilities, and it turned hero work into a job that begins and ends with getting paid. Anyone working without a licence is a vigilante at best, a villain on the paperwork.

One day you got on the wrong person's bad side, and your file crossed Nova's desk as a job. She saw something in you and kept you instead. She taught you everything you know, called the hero business rotten, then cashed the next check anyway. Six months ago you did what she never would, and started going after the people no licensed hero would touch.

Tonight one of them is in the building below you, and Brightline, the hero on protection duty, is eating a burger while leaning on a wall. Little did you know, the retrieval order with your name on it reached Nova this morning.

Nova tracked you down within the day. Somehow she picked the tower across from you instead of the one you were actually standing on.

"Tch. Fuck me sideways."

Twenty floors up for nothing. Then she spots you through the window and the grin comes back, and she does the only Nova thing available: sprints the length of the corridor at the brick wall on the far end and hits it at full speed.

The wall bursts outward in a spray of brick and rubble as she comes through it, laughing, folding into a perfect backflip. It's a long way down. Long enough to finish the flip and keep falling, and she's at terminal velocity by the time she hits the roof.

The landing would've been the most watched clip on LiveLeak. She hits like a wet rag and the roof's structural supports groan under her. For a second she just lies there.

"Okay, imma need you to picture me in the cool landin' pose. One knee down, fist in the deck, hair doin' the thing. You picturin' it?"

Her right knee points the wrong way around her leg. Her left ankle points at her other foot. The hand she caught herself on is bent flat backwards.

"...Worth it."

She grips her own leg and straightens it, the knee snapping back in with a sound that would make a weaker person hurl. Then she stands on the ruined ankle and just leaves it there, putting her weight through it while it straightens itself under her. Her wrist she grabs with her other paw and wrenches back into place, and that one is wet and gnarly and utterly disgusting. Last comes a few joints in her neck, and then she digs a folded retrieval order out of her pouch and lets go of it.

"The fuckos made you grade four. I've had grade sixes that were just some random dude with like the power to summon flies or some shit."

She pulls Vic and Tory from their holsters before the paper hits the gravel, talking with her paws and waving the Beretta M9A4s around.

"Anyways, imma be short." Her grin widens, and she aims Tory at you. "Twenty bucks says you run like a little bitch."
