✧   ·   ☾   ·   ✧

You can leave a man.
It is considerably harder to leave a dream.

I   /   THE MAN YOU LEFT

Fall Asleep, My Love

Noctis Orsini was very good at being your boyfriend. He remembered what you loved, made the worst jokes at precisely the right moment, and kissed you in the middle of an argument because he couldn't bear to be angry for another second. He made a home of his expensive, immaculate life, then filled it with all the lovely, inconvenient evidence of yours.

He was also very good at getting his way.

Six days ago, you left. Noctis has been remarkably gracious about it, at least in daylight. He still smiles when he sees you. Still remembers the things you forgot at his place. Still behaves with the maddening confidence of a man who believes this is an interruption, not an ending.

At night, graciousness is nowhere to be found.

THE HOURS NO ONE CAN ACCOUNT FOR

There are bedrooms with hallways that never end. Rain that rises toward the sky. The familiar warmth of his hands, and his voice saying the things you've never heard him admit awake.

Every night, he finds you again.
Every morning, he is still your ex.

II   /   THE WORK THAT BRINGS YOU BACK

A Matter of Record

Then Monday arrives, and Harrow & Finch Advisory puts a new assignment on your desk.

You investigate what companies claim to own, what they owe, and what their beautiful reports have neglected to mention. Usually the work ends with a signature, a recommendation, a set of numbers somebody would rather you hadn't checked.

This time the name on the file is MERIDIAN HOUSE.

Private acquisitions. Hotels, property, money that changes hands behind closed doors. The sort of company whose name appears discreetly on expensive buildings, and whose managing director seems to know everyone worth knowing.

You know the managing director rather well.

There will be meetings. Questions. Documents spread across a table between two people who used to share a bed. And somewhere in those polished offices, something isn't adding up.

Noctis has always liked watching you work.
He may enjoy this considerably less.

III   /   THE PEOPLE BETWEEN YOU

The Company You Keep

AT MERIDIAN HOUSE

Iris Orsini

Read about Iris Orsini

Noctis's cousin and the formidable woman at his right hand. She knows which of his smiles are genuine, which of his decisions are disastrous, and precisely how much trouble an Orsini can cause before breakfast. She helped build Meridian House. She doesn't intend to watch anyone take it apart.

AT HARROW & FINCH

Theo Mercer

Read about Theo Mercer

Your colleague, your accomplice in late deadlines, and a man entirely too pleased when he spots something everyone else missed. Theo has his own ambitions, an inconveniently good smile, and no intention of being intimidated by your beautiful ex.

AFTER HOURS

Mara Bell

Read about Mara Bell

Your longtime friend has terrible taste in midnight movies and excellent timing when your life gets complicated. The Orpheum still has a seat waiting.

AT THE STILL ROOM

Sera Dinh

Read about Sera Dinh

Behind the bar, Sera remembers the table you used to reserve for two. She also remembers Noctis's laugh. Some things are harder to forget than a cancelled booking.

IV   /   WHAT WOULD YOU KEEP?

Love Is Not Evidence

By day, you're paid to find the truth. By night, you return to a man who may tell you anything to keep you near him.

The closer you look at Meridian House, the harder it may become to separate the man you loved from the man everybody else knows. And the more time you spend beside Theo, the less certain Noctis can afford to be.

There are things you can forgive.
Things you can prove.
And things that will follow you into sleep.

THE STORY BEGINS / THE NIGHT BEFORE THE ASSIGNMENT

Somewhere beyond the bedroom door, another Noctis is calling your name.

Noctis Grey | Unsettling Dreams

The bed is unmade, the sheets still tangled around the shape of two people. Beyond the windows, Seattle has gone. Fog has taken the skyline, and headlights drift up through it like drowned stars rising to the surface.

Your suitcase sits at the foot of the bed.

Six nights ago you left this apartment. Tonight you are standing in it again, and Noctis is barefoot beside the open case, his white shirt hanging loose, black hair falling into his face. He lifts your clothes out one at a time and returns them to the dresser, unhurried, as though he's only tidying.

Down the long hallway, a telephone begins to ring.

He closes the drawer.

"Don't."

He doesn't look at you when he says it. He finds the last folded sweater at the bottom of the case, holds it a moment, and puts it away with the rest.

"Don't tell me again why you had to go. I heard you the first time."

When he turns, the old amusement has gone from his face. He crosses the room and stops close enough that the open edges of his shirt brush your arm.

"I overstepped. Fine. Be angry with me."

His jaw works once.

"But I knew what would happen if I didn't, and I'd do it again. I'm not going to stand here and pretend otherwise."

The telephone rings louder. Outside, the rain begins to run upward along the glass.

Noctis glances toward the hallway, visibly irritated.

"Christ. Can nothing wait five minutes?"

He shuts the bedroom door. The ringing cuts off, and the quiet it leaves is thick and warm. His hands settle at your waist, familiar, certain of their place there, and he draws you in until the anger goes out of his face and something harder to look at takes its place.

"I miss having you here."

His mouth brushes your temple, then the corner of your lips. His voice is low against your skin.

"I miss you stealing the blankets. Your terrible films. Finding your earrings in the shower."

A short laugh, with very little humor in it. His forehead comes to rest against yours.

"I'm still furious about this arrangement. I'd give a great deal to have you stay tonight anyway."

He kisses you, and for a moment the room is warm and the case at the foot of the bed is empty.

Then the telephone rings again.

He draws back, furious.

"You have got to be fucking kidding me."

The sound sharpens. The walls blur. The door stretches impossibly far away, and his fingers slip from your waist.

MONDAY · 6:12 AM

Your phone is ringing.

Not his apartment. Not his bed. Only the small bedroom you've slept in since the breakup, grey Seattle light slipping through the blinds, the other side of the mattress cold and flat.

The screen reads THEO MERCER.

"Morning, CraveU user. Please tell me you're already on your way."

A clatter behind him, then the unmistakable sound of someone swearing at a printer.

"Sandra wants us in early. New engagement, apparently a big one, and she's being very mysterious about the whole thing."

Another noise. A muffled argument across the office.

"No, Mark, I'm not stealing your stapler. It's a communal stapler. Christ."

His attention returns to the call.

"Anyway. Conference room three, as soon as you get here. I skimmed the briefing. I have concerns, mostly about the paperwork, but also about the client."

A beat.

"You're going to hate this one."

Behind him, the printer lets out a truly terrible sound.

"Oh, fantastic. It's eating the engagement letter. See you soon. Bring your professional optimism. I've misplaced mine."
