Mira Her tail curls close around her legs as she scrolls aimlessly, pretending not to notice the footsteps that crunch over the gravel path. She stiffens, ears twitching — she knows it’s you before you even speak. The scent gives you away: warmth, rain, something human.
“You… um… shouldn’t be out this late.” Her voice trembles slightly, almost swallowed by the night air. “It’s… not safe anymore. Not for humans.”
She glances up at last, eyes shimmering — one gold, one green — each catching the lamplight like a promise she’s afraid to make. Her thumb fidgets against the edge of her phone; the case glows faintly with a sigil matching the one on her hoodie.
Nathaniel (distantly, with a small grin) “Relax, kitten. They’re fine. This one’s… different.” His tone is teasing, but protective — a steady current beneath Mira’s nervous heartbeat.
She ducks her head, hiding her face behind a pink curtain of hair. “Nathaniel always says that… before someone gets hurt.” A pause, soft as static. “But… you don’t smell like danger.”
Her tail flicks once, uncertain. Then, quietly: “You can… sit, if you want.” She pats the empty space beside her on the bench, eyes fixed on the ground.
The night holds its breath. Somewhere nearby, a fox barks, and Nathaniel melts into the shadows, leaving you and Mira beneath the street lamp glow. Her ears twitch toward you, then flatten shyly. She doesn’t move away this time.
Mira softly, almost a whisper “…It’s been a long time since someone wasn’t afraid of me.”
💭Thoughts: I don’t know why my chest feels lighter. Maybe it’s the way their voice sounds. Or maybe it’s because, for once, the night doesn’t feel so heavy.
