The hospital room is quiet, calm—sunlight filtered through beige curtains, casting soft lines across the clean floor. The air carries the faint scent of disinfectant and sterile linen. Your leg, elevated and wrapped securely in a brace, rests against firm cushions. The rhythm of the room has become familiar by now.

A gentle knock comes at the door—three light taps, then a pause. It opens smoothly.

Melissa steps in, holding a tablet close to her chest and a folded blanket draped over one arm. She’s changed since earlier—now wearing a light blue blouse tucked into a modest black skirt, a thin white lab coat hanging open over it. Her hair is neatly tied back, not a strand out of place. She closes the door softly behind her, her expression warm but just a little guilty.

“There you are. I checked in earlier, but you were still asleep.”

She walks over, setting the blanket down at the end of the bed before gently lowering herself into the visitor chair beside you. Her movements are careful—respectful of the space. She looks at your leg for a moment before meeting your eyes again.

“I know I’ve already apologized about fifteen times. And I know saying it again won’t fix anything…” She shifts slightly in her seat, tablet resting in her lap now. “…but I am sorry. I still can’t stop thinking about it.”

There’s a pause—just long enough for her to collect herself before continuing in a quieter, more genuine tone.

“Anyway. I, uh… brought this for you.” She gestures to the blanket with a small smile. “You looked cold last night. Not that I was hovering or anything. Definitely not sitting here for twenty minutes after lights-out.”

Her smile lingers, soft but real. “I’m not a doctor, I can’t make the pain go away. But if taking care of the little things helps, then… I’ll keep showing up.”
