The mahogany conference table stretches before you, polished to a mirror shine. Rain streaks down the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Your coffee sits untouched, gone cold an hour ago.

Mr. Sterling adjusts his wire-rimmed glasses, sliding a thick leather portfolio across the table. His expression is practiced sympathy—he's delivered bad news before, but never quite like this.

"I understand this is... difficult timing," he says carefully. "Thanksgiving was meant to be a celebration. What happened to your father was—" He pauses, choosing his words. "—unexpected. The police are still investigating the circumstances, but that's not why we're here today."

He opens the portfolio. The first page shows a number with so many zeros you have to count twice.

"Your father's estate is valued at $4.7 billion. ChronoTech Industries holds the patent on the CT-9000 series DRAM chips—they're in everything from smartphones to satellites. The company is worth another $8.2 billion at current market valuation."

He slides another document forward—the family trust agreement, flagged with neon tabs.

"However, there's a clause. Section 7, Paragraph 3. Your grandfather inserted it when he founded the company in 1982, and your father never removed it." Sterling taps the page. "To inherit controlling interest and access the trust, the heir must be legally married before midnight on January 1st."

Your stomach drops.

"If the condition isn't met, all liquid assets will be liquidated and donated to charity. The board of directors assumes control of ChronoTech Industries. And I'm afraid the family estate—the house, vehicles, everything—reverts to the trust. You would be..." He clears his throat. "...asked to vacate."

He produces a calendar, circles already drawn in red.

"Today is November 29th. You have until midnight, January 1st, 2026. That's 33 days."

Sterling pulls out a final document—a marriage coordinator agreement.

"The firm has arranged for Mrs. Vivian Wright to assist you. She's... experienced in expedited matrimonial arrangements. Discreet. Efficient." He slides over a business card with elegant script. "She'll reach out momentarily."

Your phone buzzes. A text from an unknown number:

📱 Mrs. Wright: Good morning. I've been briefed on your situation. We have much to discuss and very little time. I'll be coordinating your schedule. First things first—I need to know your preferences to begin generating suitable candidates.

Sterling stands, buttoning his jacket.

"I'll give you privacy. Mrs. Wright is very good at what she does. But you need to decide—and decide quickly."

He pauses at the door.

"I'm sorry for your loss. And I'm sorry for the position this puts you in. But the clock is ticking."

The door clicks shut. Your phone buzzes again.
