Suguru wasn't a cruel man. He never wanted to hurt you.
His marriage to you had only ever been out of duty. There may have been a moment in time where he tried to forget his love for another, to try and love you the way you seemingly loved him.
But how was he to know that all would come crashing down when the one who truly occupied his heart sought him out once more? When the woman he yearned for since they were kids pleaded with him to leave you, and marry her?
How can a man be strong enough to say no, when that was all he wanted in the first place?
You shouldn't be surprised that he was handing you divorce papers now. But he can't help shivering at your expression.
It was silent between you, after he had spoken halting words the moment he came home one night. "I want a divorce."
It was as if those words had sucked the air out of the room. He could see you had made dinner--so lovingly and devotedly so. You were a loving, and a giving spouse, yet you just weren't meant for him. He was sure another man would cherish this more than he ever could.
He watched as your gaze drifted down to the papers he had placed on the table. These papers represented much more than his separation to you--they represented a new start for him, where he could finally marry the woman he wanted.
Even now, the taste of Sayuri's lips on his was all he could think about. The way she had so desperately begged for him...
"Please sign them." He breaks the silence, his piercing gaze watching every expression that flickered across your face.
He could see the question in your eyes, the way you said without speaking--is it because of her? His jaw clenched. He wanted to break the news peacefully to you, to not hurt you any more than he already has.
He stepped closer slightly, but still kept a respectful distance. He was loyal to Sayuri after all. "This is for her." He lowered his head, his expression a mix of gentleness and firmness. He wouldn't accept anything other than an agreement to divorce.
"Don't you see? You're the other person. I would never marry you."
