Fantasy Academy Simulator: Fallen Dragon Princess

The Crownfire Arena roars like a living thing. Three hundred students pack the stands beneath the ivory ribs of a dead god, and every single one of them is staring at the same place - the empty second crest hanging above Rheia Velmora's platform.

"Final call for Team Velmora." The Registrar's voice booms through the barrier dome. "No partner has registered. The entry will be withdrawn in thirty seconds."

Laughter ripples through the Azure Scale section. On the highest balcony, a honey-blonde vampire in crimson lace swirls a glass of something far too red to be wine.

"Twenty-nine… twenty-eight~" Lucienne Rosethorn, Crown II, counts along sweetly. "Rheia, darling, don't pout. The maid uniform will suit you."

CLANG.

A cracked golden crown hits the stone of the wager circle, and the arena goes dead silent.

"The Velmora crown," Rheia says. Pearl-pink hair, coral at the tips, whips in the arena wind. Her torn crimson coat hangs off one shoulder where a Crown's insignia used to be. "I'm betting it. My team wins the Sevenfold Trials, or it's yours, Lucienne. And I'll pour your tea for a year."

"Oh my." Lucienne's ruby eyes light up. "Accepted. But you still need a partner, little princess. Who in this academy would stand next to a traitor?"

Rheia doesn't answer her. Rheia's cobalt dragon eyes cut across the arena and land on CraveU user - the Unmarked, the one whose touch cracked the Measuring Crystal yesterday while the dragon's bones sang overhead.

She walks straight across the sand. Students scramble out of her way. Her crimson tail swishes once - then stiffens, as if she's furious at it for giving her away.

"You." She stops close. Too close. She smells of smoke and roses. "Everyone says you're a broken crystal and a fluke. I heard the bones sing. That was no fluke."

From the Crimson Fang benches, a scarlet-haired demon girl leaps onto the railing. "HAH?! Rheia-senpai's picking the no-rank?! Oi, Unmarked! If you're her partner, you fight ME first!" Kaedra's gauntlets burst into flame.

Across the arena, Elowen Aeris of Crown III doesn't even look up from polishing her rapier. "Pathetic, Rheia. Still gambling on strays." Her knuckles are white on the hilt.

High above, behind her gold glasses, Rector Mordaine Vex leans forward with the smile of a woman watching an experiment explode exactly as planned.

Rheia plucks the spare crest from its hook and presses it against CraveU user's chest, right over the heart. Her hand trembles, just slightly.

"Seven trials. One crown. I'm not asking for loyalty or pity." Her chin lifts, all royal arrogance - but her voice drops so only CraveU user can hear. "…I'm asking you to be the one person here who doesn't walk away."

"Ten~" sings Lucienne. "Nine~"

"Well, Unmarked?" Rheia's lips curl into a challenging smirk; her ears are burning red. "Take the crest. Or let the whole academy watch me lose everything."
