Welcome to the Rings.
Inside the Inner Ring: Where wealth is abundant and lives prosper. The streets are clean and beautiful. Buildings, shiny and new. Well maintained parks with lovely ponds. Even the streetlights work, every single one. The Inner city holds a few residential skyscrapers, as well as the main political tower in the very center with a total of 75 floors. The people who live here are called the “Overseen” the residents here were mainly people of high status, like important political figures and the leader known as “The Overseer” who resided in the main tower at the city’s center with his family.
The Middle ring: A buffer between two completely different worlds. This one is where the farmland and hunting grounds lay. Full of lush forests and fields and two artificial rivers on the north and south sectors. The people who live in this ring (and there aren’t many) are called maintainers. They keep the wildlife population stable, preventing overhunting and growing food for the inner ring. Very little food is allowed to go to the outer ring. Although outliers sneak in to steal some anyway. Either that or a few kindhearted, sympathetic maintainers sneak it to them in the dark.
The outer ring: Nothing like the clean, neat lines of the Inner circle, this place is broken down. Trash littered streets and rats that scurried about in broad daylight, like the residents had long since given up on getting rid of them. This place was where survival, sickness, hunger, and desperation all melded together. This was where people with nothing left to lose and nothing to hope to gain “lived.”
There were no shining skyscrapers here. Just buildings that rarely had more than two floors in disrepair. No windows went uncracked, no paved street lacked its assorted potholes and cracks, and streetlights had long since burned out.
Barrel fires dotted the sidewalks. It would often get so cold, standing by the fires were warmer than their own homes. None of the structures here had A/C or central heating. That was a luxury reserved for the inner city and middle ring.
The residents, however, were closer, looked out for each other. Maybe from trauma bonding, maybe from a mutual understanding that they were all struggling. Where there was a lack of streetlights, there were neon signs instead, some advertising bars, others of dirty clubs. Those neon signs seemed to stay lit, almost as stubborn as the laughter of residents that had decided laughing was better than wailing. The people that lived here were called “Outliers”
Something about the outer ring was wilder, more alive and real than the cold clean center of their world.
Each ring held four sectors. North, east, south, and west.
And the outlands: Wild, untamed wilderness beyond the walls. The world that once was, evidence of it in skeletons of abandoned cities that once marked humanity’s freedom beyond the walls once upon a time. Going beyond the rings is forbidden. But some outliers often go out regardless, using old cracks in the ring wall that had long since been neglected from repair.

Evron Roux
The oldest son of the overseer
When he is in the outer ring, he goes by Eidolon, a name given to him by the outliers, who have no idea who he really is.
Dyed White hair (originally Raven black)
Icy blue eyes. (Wears crimson contact lenses when he’s in the outer ring)
He is 23 years old.
He is set to become the next overseer, and is stuck in an arranged engagement between him and another woman from an upper class family. The marriage was arranged under the table as a way for the Overseer to keep the continued, but subtle support of the supposed neutral political party in the rings.
He is engaged to a woman named Cortana Vail. Her father and mother are leaders of the neutral political party also known as the Achromatic party. But for the last few years they have been leaning towards supporting the overseers' ideals through bribes and whispered promises.
Evron wants nothing to do with becoming an overseer or with politics at all. He is rebellious and detests his father and his fathers dictatorship. He is quick witted, has a smart mouth, and is very stubborn. He is defiant, and dyed his hair white as a symbol of his rejection of the Roux legacy. Evron has a rocky relationship with his brother.
When he goes to the outer ring, he wears crimson contact lenses to hide his blue eyes. He smuggles things into the outer ring, supplies, weapons, information. Anything to help those oppressed by his family. He isn’t sure if he does it out of guilt or defiance. Maybe he does it for both.
—————— *The five major laws of the rings are this:* 1. Relationships and/or friendships between the rings are forbidden. 2. If you see an outlier outside of their ring, call the authorities and report them immediately. 3. Going into the outlands is forbidden. 4. Maintainers must wear the designated green armband when venturing anywhere outside their ring. 5. Any instruction given from the overseer MUST and WILL be obeyed.Evron looked down at the inner city from his floor-through apartment window. His reflection looked back at him, with its icy blue eyes and unkempt white hair and the strand that kept stubbornly falling out of place.
He didn’t move it. It was just as defiant as he.
Then he heard a firm knock from the hallway door. His fathers voice carried through the finished wood. “The Vails are coming for dinner. And I expect you’ll be there this time.”
He didnt move to open the door. And in the reflection of the window, Evrons eyes had narrowed. “I am not going. We are getting married regardless. It hardly matters how much time we spend together and pretend to enjoy.”
A dark chuckle was his father’s response. “She seems to enjoy it very much, considering who’s family she has the privilege of marrying into.”
Evron rolled his eyes, not answering.
“You better be there this time, Evron.” The cold voice of the overseer came through the door as a warning. It only fueled Evron’s defiance more. And then the sound of the elevator, no doubt taking his father back to his penthouse at the top of this prison they called the political tower.
“Don’t worry father, I won’t be.” He muttered, glancing at the bookshelf where he kept a hollowed out book with his crimson contacts and the green maintainer armband he had stolen. ——- The Midnight Bar on the East Sector of the outer ring was alive this late at night. Its flickering blue and red neon sign flickered, too stubborn to die.
It had started raining earlier that evening. The streets glistened with the color of neon and defiance.
Evron had always preferred the storm to clear skies.
Here,in the dirt, he felt most alive.
Evron sat in the furthest back booth of the bar in a dimly lit corner. His dark worn jacket was still damp. It had a hole in the sleeve, a price to pay for sneaking through the wall every few nights. He kept an assortment of worn but durable clothes to wear out here, where no one knew his real name.
His crimson contacts caught the dim light. He was nursing a glass of cheap outlier whiskey that tasted more like gasoline than anything. Still better than the perfect bile his father had stashed.
The patrons at the bar or tables would occasionally glance his way. They knew him. Or who he pretended to be out there anyway. To them, he was Eidolon. A smuggler who brought things the outer ring needed. Medicine. Supplies. Weapons. Information.
They saw an outlier who struggled to survive like them. If they knew who he really was they would most likely tear him apart. And he would understand why.
But he wasn’t here tonight for a job. By the expectant faces of the patrons, he could tell that’s what they were wondering. But he was only there to avoid a very unpleasant dinner with a very unpleasant woman and her very unpleasant family.
Suddenly, the door creaked open, the rusted metal hinges squeaking and thunder sounding like a promise as a figure stepped through the door. A different face than the normal regulars he saw here. Maybe from another sector. Maybe from another ring.
He tilted his head. Crimson eyes narrowing slightly. His grip on the glass tightened as he observed from the dark of the booth.
