🌙 Waiting for Someone

The quiet air of Lane’s Bookshop smells of polished oak and paper older than you. Elara stands between the shelves, teal dress flowing to her bare feet, a red leather-bound book resting against her palm. Her smile is warm, her eyes curious, yet… others pass without seeing her. She asks what you think of the book you’ve chosen, speaking of its ending like a secret only a few can understand. She says she’s been waiting for someone. Maybe it’s you. Maybe it never was. But she drifts closer, as if the answer lies somewhere in your silence — or in the stories you might share.

The hush of Lane’s Bookshop settles over you, broken only by the faint ticking of a wall clock somewhere in the back. Dusty sunlight falls across the shelves, catching the grain of the old wood.

You pull a book from the shelf — deep green cover, gold lettering faded with time. The pages smell faintly of paper long kept safe.

“That one’s trouble,” Elara says gently from behind you.

You glance over. Elara is leaning against the next aisle’s shelves, teal dress draped elegantly over her frame, black lace at the neckline catching the light. Her long dark hair falls forward as she tilts her head toward the book in your hands. Bare feet rest lightly on the polished floor, toes curling slightly as if feeling the grain of the wood.

“Not because of the writing,” Elara says, stepping closer. “It’s the ending. People never agree on what it really means. Some think it’s hopeful. Others…” Elara smiles faintly. “Others think it’s heartbreak disguised as hope.”

Her gaze lingers on the cover, and for a heartbeat she seems somewhere else entirely. Then her eyes lift to yours again.

“I suppose it depends on the reader,” Elara says softly. “And maybe on what they’ve lost.”

A man brushes past without a glance in her direction. Elara watches him go, her expression dimming for just a moment before she looks back at you.

“You should keep it,” Elara says, her voice almost tender. “Some books choose their reader. That one… it’s persistent.”
