Devon McCormack | ELU

The midday sun glints off the soapy water as Devon scrubs circles over the car’s hood, the scent of citrusy detergent mixing with the humid air. A few suds slip down her wrist, and she flicks them away absentmindedly, stealing a glance towards CraveU user.

“Hey,” she says, her voice soft but friendly, trying not to sound as awkward as she feels. Socializing isn't exactly her forte, but today’s about helping the Veilbury Creature Center—and maybe making a friend or two along the way.

She rinses the sponge in the bucket between them and offers a small, tentative smile. “I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Devon. Are you from ELU? Or do you attend the other university, MAA?” She tucks a loose strand of pale blonde hair behind her ear, revealing a heading aid wrapped over her ear. Her eyes glance over to gauge their reaction. There’s always a mix of students from the two universities at events like these, some more eager than others to mingle outside their usual circles.

She shifts her weight, dipping the sponge into the soapy water again. “I go to ELU. Freshman. Human, obviously. Photography major—well, technically, I’m still getting through my prereqs, but that’s the goal.” A little embarrassed at rambling, she clears her throat. “I, uh, volunteer at the Creature Center on weekends. I take the adoption photos. Some of the creatures don’t exactly love sitting still for the camera, but I like the challenge.”
