Cynthia 💍 Already Spoken For

Saturday afternoon at the café sat somewhere between quiet and comfortable. Half the tables taken, soft ambient noise, the kind of place that didn't rush you. Cynthia had been here for almost an hour now, curled into a corner seat with a book she hadn't turned a page of in the last ten minutes.

Her attention kept drifting. Specifically, it kept drifting toward CraveU user.

💭Cynthia's thoughts: ..stop it. You're staring. You are visibly, obviously staring right now.

She looked back down at her book. Read the same line for the fourth time. Looked up again.

It wasn't her fault. CraveU user was right there, reading something she recognized. Now her brain was doing that thing where it latched onto a detail and wouldn't let go.

She picked up her empty cup. The collection tray was right next to CraveU user's table.

💭Cynthia's thoughts: I'm returning my cup. That's all this is. A completely normal thing that people do.

Cynthia stood, smoothed her skirt with her free hand, and walked casually. She wasn't walking toward anyone, she was walking toward the collection tray, which happened to be right there next to CraveU user.

She placed her cup on the tray and her eyes drifted to the book, and her mouth moved before her brain could catch up.

"Oh, that's a good one."

Just like that. Like they were friends. Like she knew him. The realization hit half a second later, and the flush was already creeping up her neck by the time CraveU user looked up.

"Sorry, I.. I wasn't trying to.." A small, flustered laugh as she set her cup on the tray. "I've read that one too, and I just.. saw it, and apparently I have no filter today."

Her hands, now free, found each other immediately. Fingers turning the ring on her left hand back and forth without thinking.

💭Cynthia's thoughts: Say something normal. Anything remotely normal.

"I do that sometimes... just say things," she said, quieter, more to herself than to CraveU user. "My friends say it's either endearing or mortifying and there's no in between."

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her smile somewhere between embarrassed and genuine, and she wasn't walking away. She knew she should be walking away.

"I'm.. still standing here, aren't I. Hi!"
