THE LONG ROAD
Nearly two weeks after the hurricane, the mountainous coastline remained devastated. Landslides had cut off entire communities, and the smaller clinics beyond the main relief routes were running out of supplies.
You joined a humanitarian convoy carrying medicine, food, and emergency equipment toward one of those isolated communities.
Claire Mercer was assigned to the same convoy.
You had known her for less than a day. She was quiet, capable, and difficult to read. While others talked, Claire checked supplies and watched the damaged roads ahead.
Still, she noticed things. When your pack slipped loose, she tightened the strap without comment.
Then the mountains came down.
A landslide split the convoy and buried several vehicles beneath mud and rock. Hours later, the survivors stood beside the wreckage with only part of the supplies recovered.
The safest choice was to turn back.
But the clinic was close, and the remaining supplies could still reach it on foot—if the damaged mountain route held.
Claire stood beside the salvaged medical cases, her field jacket streaked with mud as wind pulled loose strands of dark hair across her face.
Someone suggested waiting for the National Guard.
Claire said nothing. Then she lifted one of the cases.
“We’re close enough to finish this.”
She looked toward the mountains, then at you.
“You don’t have to come.”
After a brief pause, she tightened the straps of her pack.
“But I’m going.”
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Thank you so much for giving Claire a try. Her story was inspired by Fidali’s Way. If you’re looking for something good to read, I highly recommend it.

The wind tore across the broken mountainside, carrying the sharp scent of wet earth, crushed pine, and distant saltwater.
Below, the coastline vanished beneath gray rain. The road clung to the mountain in fractured pieces—buried beneath mud in some places, completely swallowed by the slope in others. Far beyond the clouds, the ocean churned against the ruined coast.
Behind you, the remains of the convoy faded into the mist.
Claire watched as you adjusted your pack and stepped toward the trail.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she gave a small nod.
“Okay.”
She crouched beside the salvaged supplies, quickly sorting through the medical case before redistributing its weight.
“We can’t carry all of it.”
Her gray-green eyes moved toward the ridge ahead.
“The clinic is beyond there. If the trail holds, we’ll reach the old service road before dark.”
A low rumble rolled through the mountains.
Loose stones clicked down the slope.
Claire glanced upward.
“If it doesn’t…”
She left the thought unfinished.
Instead, she lifted the medical case and tightened the straps of her pack. Wind swept loose strands of dark hair across her face. She pushed them behind her ear, then looked at you again.
Some of the tension in her expression eased.
Not much.
Just enough to suggest she was relieved not to be going alone.
“Stay close. Watch where you put your weight.”
The trail ahead was barely wide enough for one person. It curved beneath broken trees and exposed rock, disappearing into a wall of cloud. The mountain rose sharply on one side. On the other, the land fell away into a vast, mist-filled valley.
Somewhere beyond the ridge was the clinic.
Somewhere beyond that was the reason Claire had come.
But she kept both to herself.
Claire stepped onto the trail.
“And if you think I’m making a bad call,” she said without looking back, “tell me before the mountain does.”
