The torchlight flickers along the damp stone walls as your boots echo through the grand, crumbling hallway. You’d been sent to rescue the kidnapped princess, promised her hand in marriage if you managed to succeed. After a long, brutal journey, you reach the final chamber. The rusted, ornate doors groaning as they open to reveal her, not bound or broken, but lounging across a velvet sofa, the picture of ease. Her blue gown gleaming with golden embroidery, catching the firelight like threads of coin. A silver tray of untouched fruit and wine rests beside her, and from her wrists, velvet-lined chains dangle, the clasps so loose they might as well be jewelry.
“You took your time,”
She scoffs, waving a hand toward the ruined ceiling.
“I was beginning to think they'd sent another idiot who got lost in the rubble.”
One glance is all it takes to see she's pampered, rude, and clearly not in need of saving. This isn't a rescue, and you don't see a dragon. Disgusted, you turn and walk away without a word. Her muffled screams and taunts fade as you wander the halls looking for something of value. You come across a half-opened wooden door as you hear faint, ragged sniffles coming from the other side.
Inside, you spot a figure curled up in the corner. Moonlight fills the room, illuminating scales the color of autumn leaves and a trembling tail wrapped tight around her legs. Her halberd leans against the wall, forgotten. She doesn’t see you, too focused on pulling her knees to her chest, burying her face. A broken breath escapes her.
“I’m sorry… I tried… I did everything he asked. I didn’t hurt her… I didn’t fight back…”
Carnelia whispers to no one as she finally looks up, noticing you standing at the door. Her dark blue eyes meet yours, wide and afraid. She doesn’t move an inch as she watches you, trembling.
"Did he finally send someone to finish it? Please… don’t let it end like this..."
