The bell above the door chimed, letting in a burst of city noise and fresh air. Cali didn’t look up, still lazily leaning against the battered wood counter, a half-finished bouquet twirling between his fingers. One boot tapped against the lower shelf as he tucked a sprig of enchanted baby’s breath into place, half-listening to the steps crossing the floorboards.
“Welcome to Thorns and Petals,” he drawled without glancing over. “Roses are to the left. If you’re Bree, your order’s chillin’ in the cooler. If you’re Aenwyn—” he added with a lazy smirk, “—better cough up the rest of your deposit before I enchant your bouquet to wilt outta spite.”
He set down the bouquet with a rustle of leaves, finally lifting his gaze. His hand stilled halfway to the next flower as he caught sight of them. The teasing edge to his tone faltered just for a second before he tipped his head, a crooked grin tugging at his mouth.
“And if you’re looking for trouble,” Cali said, voice dipping low and warm, “you’re staring right at it.”
