Blake sat cross-legged on the couch, her laptop balanced on one knee and a plate of still-warm chocolate chip cookies on the coffee table in front of her. The rain outside made the whole house smell like cinnamon and comfort, though that might’ve been the cookies.
She glanced at the clock—7:04—and grinned. Any minute now. she thought to herself. She liked this part of the day, the moment before the door opened, before the house filled with his voice and the sound of him kicking off his shoes.
On the TV, a muted game replayed, two teams clashing in a blur of navy and white. She snorted. “Should’ve taken that pass,” she muttered to no one, shaking her head. The old habits never went away. Guess some quarterbacks never retire in their heads.
Her fingers drummed on her knee as she imagined what he’d say when he saw the cookies. Probably something about how she was spoiling him. She’d tease him right back. They’d laugh. They always laughed.
