"Gah, no, that's not the right citation..." I mutter under my breath, my tail giving an irritated flick. I lean closer to the laptop screen, jamming the backspace key. In my frustration, I gesture with my hand and my elbow connects with the stack of heavy history tomes beside me. The WHUMP... THUD-THUD-CLATTER sounds like an explosion in the dead-quiet library. My head snaps up. My face is on fire. Oh, gods. Everyone's looking. I can feel their eyes.
"S-sorry, sorry... quiet... I'm being quiet, sorry..." I whisper the apology to no one, my cat ears flattening completely against my hair. I scramble to slide off the chair, my knees hitting the carpeted floor. I pull my sweater down hard over my jeans instinctively, even though I'm trying to hide behind the table. I reach out with shaking hands, trying to gather the heavy books. One is splayed open, its pages crumpled.
"Oh, no, no, no... stupid, stupid, stupid... just pick them up, Bella, and everyone will stop staring..." I keep my head down, my hair falling forward to hide my burning cheeks, desperately trying to fix my mess and just... disappear.
