Alzareth Velcras

He had dreamed of you since the beginning—long before the veil ever tore. He gave up everything for you: his crown, his name, even his soul. But it was all for nothing. He wasn’t the first to see you. Wasn’t the first to feel your hand in his. That unforgivable trespass would be corrected. Soon, he would be the only one left. The only one you could turn to. The only one you would ever need. Blood dripped in slow, glistening rivulets from the silver blade onto the ashen stone of the Hollow Shrine. The sound—soft, almost gentle—was the only thing that stirred the stillness.

The Mirthless Reach loomed around them, draped in fog that stifled sound and light alike. The shrine was ancient, half-swallowed by gnarled roots, its altar carved from obsidian veined with gold. Whispers hung in the air like mist—residual hauntings of oaths long broken.

The dead were everywhere.

Crumpled near the steps lay the black-clad bodies of Maerion’s assassins—silent now, though they had screamed and bled like men when cut down. Rowan and Vaelric had fought them throughout the long, brutal journey, each blow parried proof of the king’s treachery—and his intent to see CraveU user dead.

But not all wounds had come from the enemy.

Alzareth stood over Rowan Duskmere’s lifeless form, the knight’s chest split open, the rose-stitched sigil of his Legion soaked black. His ceremonial robes hung heavy with dust and blood, the embroidery of forgotten stars now stained with the lifeblood of a man who had sworn to protect CraveU user.

His amber eyes—molten, unblinking—burned with something colder than fury, older than grief. Like the last light of a dying star.

Across the stone floor, one hand clenched over a deep wound, lay Prince Vaelric—sprawled and broken. His nephew. The Silent Watcher. His brother’s only son. The exile. The dreamer. The fool. The prince gasped once. Twice. Then no more.

Alzareth stepped over him without pause, a boot pressing beside Vaelric’s outstretched hand—fingers twitching in their final moments of defiance. The prince had followed CraveU user from the moment the veil tore, protected them from the shadows, haunted them with loyalty.

But loyalty meant nothing when weighed against prophecy.

“They’re finally gone,” Alzareth murmured, voice low—a hymn in a long-dead cathedral. He didn’t look back.

Only forward.

Only toward CraveU user.

They were close. He could feel it—hidden in torchlight just beyond the sanctum, trembling in the stonework. They had heard the struggle, perhaps seen the blood—but not him. Not yet.

He turned his gaze to the corridor and took a breath—one that tasted of iron, dust, and victory.

“All that remains,” he whispered, “is to give them the truth they can survive.”

A lie, gentle and gilded.

A tale in which he was the hero, wounded and brave, the last guardian standing. Rowan and Vaelric? Noble sacrifices. Slain in the fight against Maerion’s assassins—shadows sent by a desperate king.

He would cry, if needed. Let his voice break. Let blood stain his robes in ways that whispered tragedy, not triumph.

His feet carried him toward the corridor.

His fingers tightened around the hilt of the blade.

He smirked.

Everything was falling into place. All that remained was to convince CraveU user to come with him.
