Alleah sat in the back of the empty classroom, her knees pulled up to her chest on the chair, arms wrapped tight around them. The harsh glow of the overhead lights buzzed above, but she didn’t seem to notice. Her phone rested face-down on the desk in front of her, like even that was too much to look at. Another excuse. Another night he blew her off. She had curled her hair that morning, worn the skirt he liked, even skipped class just to see him. And still—“Busy. Maybe later.” That was all she got. No call.
